Job Description
(1) Circulation
Implements and operates the circulation and reserve modules of the library management system (Innopac and Millennium); trains staff in use and operation of these modules
Coordinates, organizes, and supervises all aspects of the overdue process. Runs daily overdue notices and bills. Accepts payments for fines and bills. Acts autonomously to resolve patron disputes over fines. Coordinates with the Student Affairs and Registrar’s Office to handle unpaid fines and bills.
Coordinates, organizes and supervises all aspects of the reserve process.
Performs routine circulation tasks such as registering and updating files of borrowers; interpreting status of patron accounts, checking in and out library materials, assisting patrons with inquiries regarding availability and status of items in collections, and assisting users regarding circulation and borrowing services.
Oversees library security, resolving security infractions by halting the action, explaining library policies, and/or reporting serious infractions to the Director of the Library
Opens and/or closes the library on designated days
(2) Serials Management
Creates check-in records in the serials module of the library management system for all new periodical subscriptions
Oversees the check-in of periodical materials
Resolves problems relating to subscriptions, duplicate shipments, payment verification, etc.
Ensures the timely renewal of serial subscriptions
Investigates data received from claims reports relative to subscription issues not received
Supervises the preparing, sending and receiving of binding shipments
Updates serial check-in records to reflect issues sent to bindery
Upon return, updates serial holdings records in the library management system
Trains staff as necessary in the use of automated serials system
(3) Supervision of Student Employees
Makes hiring decisions and schedules student employees (approximately 12-15 per year) to ensure adequate coverage during all hours the library is open
Develops and implements effective training programs
Provides oversight of the day-to-day work of students employees
Determines specific work assignments and reviews work
Reviews and signs timecards
Conducts annual performance evaluations for student employees
Provides counseling and/or discipline when problems arise
(4) Reference
Serves as a member of the Library’s Reference team, staffing the Reference Desk approximately 15-20 hours per week
Provides general and subject-specific reference assistance to patrons including assisting patrons with the selection and use of appropriate databases and print resources to meet their research needs
Troubleshoots computer and printer related problems
Develops and maintains subject expertise and ongoing familiarity with existing and emerging print and electronic information sources in the subject areas taught at Johnson & Wales University
(5) Stacks Maintenance
Oversees the management of the stacks including the shelving, shifting, straightening, and shelf-reading of all library materials
Develops shelf-reading assignments for student workers; oversees completion of assignments
Searches the stacks for books reported missing or billed for replacement
Conducts annual inventories of the collections
(6) Miscellaneous
Actively markets the Circulation and Reserve services of the library on an ongoing basis
Participates in the strategic planning and policy decisions of the library

Work schedule:
Sunday - Wednesday
1:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Rotate one Saturday per month

Applicants must have at least a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of one year library experience. Based on the schedule, the applicant must be exceptionally reliable and have the ability to work independently with minimum or no supervision. Other requirements include customer service experience (preferably in a library setting), excellent organizational skills, an aptitude for detailed work, interpersonal and communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the Internet. Circulation, supervisory (of student workers), and reference experience as well as knowledge of subjects covered by the Culinary, Business, and/or Hospitality fields is highly desirable.
