BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION: It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage, and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the library’s mission by providing general information and assistance to the public and participating in a wide range of support activities for Adult Services.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of basic library practices and procedures
- Ability to promote the use of library resources and programs through effective communications
- Ability to work independently without close supervision
- Ability to conduct effective patron interviews to determine a user’s needs
- Ability to instruct patrons in library resources
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to exhibit sound professional judgment and demeanor in all public interactions
- Ability to think and act appropriately under pressure while serving on the public desk
- Ability to promote library resources and programs
- Ability to represent the Library District with tact and courtesy
- Ability to use personal computers, microforms equipment, and other business machines effectively
- Proficiency with computer applications and databases; experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook strongly preferred
- Ability to work as an effective team member, have a "whatever-it-takes" work ethic, and have an excellent customer service attitude
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Will work 12 hours processing Interlibrary Loan requests and up to 8 hours on public desks providing information service to walk-in and telephone patrons.
- Maintains confidentiality in all patron and staff interactions
- Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the library when interacting with patrons and staff
- Assists and instructs patrons through material and on-line searches, computer software applications, community referrals, and outside sources/collections
- Provides general assistance and information about the library’s services and procedures
- Refers patrons and in-depth research questions to reference staff
- May provide support for specialized projects, services, programs, and activities related to divisional goals and needs
- May troubleshoot basic computer and office equipment problems
- Performs other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in any field or an Associate for Library Technician degree
- Requires a minimum of one year of library experience or other public service work experience
- Requires intermediate-level proficiency using Microsoft software applications (specifically MS Word, Excel, Outlook); prefer candidates that can accurately type 45+ words per minute
- Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude; bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse patrons
