Title: Librarian III – Collection Management Catalogue
Job Description:
Professional work in Collection Management of the New Orleans Public Library responsible for cataloging library materials and assisting in ensuring the accuracy of NOPL’s public access catalog. Employee supervises a small group of professionals, para-professionals, and clerical assistants.
Illustrative Tasks:
- Catalog print and non-print materials using OCLC Connexion Browser, Polaris and the Dewey Decimal Classification system, including original cataloging
- Maintain knowledge of current trends in professional cataloging rules and standards
- Provide customer service related to catalog problems and questions initiated by Library staff
- Search OCLC for MARC records, locate and match records to items needing cataloging, and edit records to conform to locally established standards
- Proficient in downloading, and accurate loading of bibliographic records from a multitude of sources.
- Proficient in expunging records and record groups from the system
- Assume daily management duties and responsibilities in the absence of the Division Head
- Participate in opening day shipments, processing materials, entering materials into the catalog, overseeing volunteers as needed
- Develop and present training on cataloging
- Attend professional development classes, conferences, meetings and trainings.
- Enter weekly timesheets for staff
- Assist or lead technical and other special projects and reports, as assigned
- Participate on system-wide committees
- Perform other related duties as required
- Oversee the library’s migration from AACR2 to RDA
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of NOPL's collection and patron population
- Working knowledge of public library practices and procedures
- Knowledge of the purpose of cataloging and familiarity with MARC records and the Dewey Decimal classification system or equivalent
- Knowledge of AACR2 and RDA
- Ability to organize work effectively, determine priorities, make decisions and complete assigned duties
- Ability to effectively direct and follow-up the work of others
- Ability to effectively access and utilize NOPL’s computerized systems and the internet
- Strong and effective spoken and written communication skills
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers within the department and library-wide and the general public
- Ability to analyze and resolve complex problems
- Ability to exercise creativity and initiative in a changing environment
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry NOPL materials weighing up to approximately to 25 pounds
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science from an A.L.A. accredited program, including coursework in cataloging rules and standards
At least four (4) years of full-time professional library experience, which must have been gained after receipt of a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
Annual Salary: $46,306
