Job Description
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
PATRON ASSISTANCE - Assists patrons in the use of library materials and technology by guiding them in searching the catalog and stacks, accessing databases, and navigating the Internet in order to locate resources in the collection and on the World Wide Web.
INFORMATION NAVIGATION - Locates requested materials and information sources by using the electronic catalog to identify call number location and checking the shelf for availability and placing holds for materials checked-out or available from other branches or systems in order to satisfy patron requests for library materials and information.
PROGRAMMING - Plans informative and entertaining programs for patrons such as book discussion groups, computer instruction, story times and school visits by accessing resources in the collection and the community and coordinating such programs in order to promote use of library resources.
MATERIALS COLLECTION - Weeds and discards items in collection by assessing the condition and suitability of items, notifying the Collection Librarian of the discarded item, and recommending additions to the collection in order to keep collection attractive, current and useful.
SHELVING - Shelves library materials by putting carts in order according to type and places materials on shelves according to Dewey decimal number or author name; searches for and retrieves requested items according to paging slips; reads the order of materials on the shelves by checking for correct Dewey or alphabetical order, shifts and straightens materials to correct the order as needed, and returns materials left on tables to the shelves, and sorts carts of returned material in order to maintain the order of the collection so that materials can be found by library staff and patrons.
OTHER DUTIES – Places labels and dates materials, creates and maintains bulletin boards and displays, and assists Supervisor in order to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
Additional Info & Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree and experience in a public contact position; or any equivalent combination of experience, which provides the critical success factors.
Experience working with children and teens (preferred)
Skill in basic computer operation (preferred)
Fluency in English and Spanish languages (preferred)
