Job Description
Position Description and Responsibilities The Executive Director has overall responsibility for fundraising, grant writing, staff supervision, planning, financial management, program management, marketing, and community relations. The Executive Director will lead the Board and staff through a period of strategic growth and transformation during the upcoming years. The Executive Director should have experience or skill in managing capital projects requiring collaboration with elected officials, foundations, private sector and private donors. He/She will be a relationship builder who has a high level of organizational and political sophistication, especially as it relates to connecting programs to funding, creatively generating other resources and building collaborative and strategic partnerships within the community. The Executive Director should be an articulate and compelling spokesperson, able to portray the mission of the organization to a variety of constituents. He or she will meet regularly with current and prospective donors and be responsible for significantly increasing sources of unearned income. The candidate should have experience or skill in working effectively with a volunteer Board. The individual needs to be a strategic thinker who is able to transform vision and ideas into financially sustainable and high impact programs. He or she will possess a high level of financial literacy, good business judgment and entrepreneurial instincts. The Executive Director will provide leadership to the staff and be responsible for building a successful, high functioning team. The ideal candidate will have multi-cultural fluency and ability to attract and engage diverse attendees, members, donors, business partners, researchers, etc.

About the Organization The Bessemer Historical Society’s Mission is to provide continuing education to the public through the preservation of the historic archives, artifacts and buildings of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. BHS collects, preserves, interprets, and exhibits the collections of the steel and mining industry, the Bessemer neighborhood, and the working families of the steel and mining industry in the region and the Industrial West. For more information, see http://www.cfisteel.org/ Qualifications The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear passion for the mission of the Steelworks Museum of Industry & Culture and the CF&I Archives and its clients, an appreciation of its history, and palpable excitement about its future. Knowledge of and experience with cultural institutions, research collections, the Pueblo, Colorado nonprofit community and federal, state and local governmental sectors strongly preferred. Background or experience in museum management or archives administration a plus. The candidate must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, but a master’s degree in a field such as public history, museum studies, or archives management is preferred.
