Job Description
Background Info: This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the Denver Public Library through the development and implementation of the Community-Enhanced Service Styles concept. Become a librarian at a Learning and Language branch and bring a new service environment to customers who are working towards an improved quality of life. The key role of this branch model will be to bring bilingual library services and resources to a diverse customer base that includes new immigrants and their families. Adult programming will be a focus of these branches as well as concurrent children’s programs as part of a bilingual and intergenerational environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: Empowers and serves a population aiming to learn and explore new frontiers. Fulfills the expectations of a diverse population, in particular addressing the largest language needs, Spanish and Vietnamese, in our communities. Designs and provides programming and an environment that fits the needs of new immigrant families, bilingual families, or those who seek learning new skills. Creates a new style of service shared between seven branch libraries. Oversees daily operations of a branch location including personnel, scheduling and customer service issues. Communicates effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, staff and administration.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of presenting and providing library services to customers who may not have literacy or technology skills. Skill in providing leadership. Skill in providing programming and library services in a bilingual and intergenerational environment. Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers and community. Ability to create and maintain positive relationship with customers, staff and the community. Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Ability to select, train, motivate, and supervise professional and clerical staff. Spanish language fluency is a definite plus.
Experience: Two years of professional work in a library.
Education: A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
