This position reports to the Washington State Librarian and is responsible for overseeing statewide programs with minimal oversight. Additionally, as Community Outreach Librarian, this person works in coordination with Washington libraries, community stakeholders, OSOS and State Library staff in utilizing social and traditional media to highlight and promote library services and activities.
- Coordinates with designated staff at the Seattle Public Library to jointly manage the statewide program for the CFTB
- Identifies a list of recommended activities, scoping out the requirements, timeline, and budget needs, to be jointly reviewed and approved by the leadership of both the State Library and Seattle Public Library
- Participates in important nationwide CFTB activities, which can include representing the Washington State libraries at the National Book Festival, an annual literary event held in Washington DC, the Center for the Book Ideas Exchange held every year in the spring and the Statewide Coordinator's meeting held the day before the National Book Festival
- Continues the popular Letters About Literature program, under the new umbrella of CFTB, which includes promoting the event, outreach letters to schools, recruiting judges to review student letters, and coordinating an awards ceremony and submission of local finalists to the nationwide program
- Coordinates, along with designated Seattle Public Library staff, the Washington State Book Awards
- Develops and/or coordinates community literary events throughout Washington state to promote reading and life-long learning in association with local libraries
- Develops and promotes library services and programs in partnership with other libraries and stakeholder groups such as community reads programs
- Communicates with library management and staff to develop strategic methods to involve local communities with their libraries
- Manages and reports out the program budget and establishes measures for program success that are tracked and reported to the leadership of both participating libraries
- Convenes the membership group of participating libraries, in order to review issues, coordinate coverage schedules and address technical concerns
- Communicates with the vendor on technical performance issues, requested feature improvements and the project delivery dates for ongoing product improvement projects
- When necessary, performs RFPs to consider alternative vendor solutions and to compare features and performance against a prioritized list of feature requirements
- Promotes the benefits of the AskWa cooperative, including recruiting new libraries to the service
- Assists the participating libraries in marketing and promoting the AskWa service to library directors and staff, community organizations and library users, in order to guarantee financial support and high usage
- Sets goals and performance measures for the service overall, in order to demonstrate the service's value and growing relevance to the communities it serves
- Coordinates with library staff to generate blog content, as well as photos and news of interest via Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Facebook and other popular social communication means in order to generate interest in, and appreciation of libraries and librarians
- Works closely with the Office's Communications staff in order to coordinate messaging and collaborate on new communication initiative
- Develops relationships with groups across Washington to promote libraries and library services, including community groups, government agencies, citizen advocates and other stakeholders and consumers in the library community
- Identifies and develops new programs, using the project development model, to address new opportunities to provide community outreach and to bring together efforts already in play at the State Library and amongst libraries in the state
- Four years of full-time experience as a professional librarian with at least one year of experience developing, managing, and/or implementing library programs
- Ability to efficiently use a personal computer and applicable software including WordPress and GoogleDocs, and a curiosity to explore other technology solutions in order to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position
- Demonstrated experience using social media in a professional capacity (to promote an organization, business, or government entity)
- Professional level knowledge of library trends, principles, and practices

The library benefits local libraries and their patrons through its consulting services, grants, subsidies, training, and programming. Additionally, the Washington State Library provides services to state prison and state hospital libraries. OSOS also operates the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library (WTBBL) in Seattle, a library for people unable to read standard print.
