Job Description
NATURE OF WORK This is responsible administrative and professional work, reporting to the Library Services Manager. Responsible for the following services and operations of a City of Westminster Library Facility: circulation desk, new books area, shelving activities, and some facility and equipment maintenance for the library facility. Supervises paraprofessional staff, including Library Associates, Clerks, and Pages, as well as volunteers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Creates a pleasant, customer-friendly atmosphere for patrons at the library through careful planning and maintenance of the physical facility, positive interaction with patrons, maintaining fair and equitable circulation policies, and training staff in customer service techniques. Promotes circulation of library materials through attractive, orderly, and easy to find arrangement and display of assorted media. Plans, directs and monitors the circulation activities of the College Hill Library including customer services, some general facility maintenance, shelving, and collection maintenance. Responds to and resolves customer issues that may include disputed fines, overdue, lost, or damaged items, problems with loan requests, and/or library policy interpretation. Works collaboratively with collection agency in the recovery of fees and/or overdue materials. Purchases and maintains equipment and furniture for public service areas of the library, including circulation equipment, self-check units, security systems, etc. Manages Circulation staff: oversees all hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations. Provides procedural guidance and training for staff. Performs administrative duties including budgeting, long-range service planning, managing financial resources, purchasing and report writing. Serves as a member of the Library Supervisors team. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Cooperates with other library supervisory staff, including FRCC staff, to determine and provide all customer service needs for the facility. Serves as a liaison with community, civic and educational organizations. Serves as Acting Library Services Manager as assigned. May assist “Friends of the Library” volunteers in management of ongoing used book sale. Performs other duties and special assignments as required. May be required to work evenings and weekends. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Excellent customer service, management and supervisory skills. Thorough knowledge of techniques, principles, methods, materials and practices used in the operation of a public library, and/or the operation of a large public facility. Some knowledge of books, book selection, tools and methods. Ability to analyze professional and administrative problems and make recommendations. Ability to manage complex scheduling tasks. Ability to develop and manage a budget. Prepare cash deposits following City of Westminster guidelines. Supervise cash handling procedures according to City of Westminster policies. Ability to direct the work of paraprofessional and clerical library personnel in a manner conducive to high morale and full performance. Ability to interpret library policies and objectives to library and other City staff, community groups, and the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse citizen groups, employees and other City administrators. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Familiarity with computer hardware and software and experience in the use of automated databases preferred. Spanish language skills and/or experience in working with patrons from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds desired. MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED Frequent use of telephones, computer terminals, personal computers, photocopier, bar-code readers, book security system equipment, disc repair equipment, cash register, credit card machine and audio-visual equipment. Regular use of personal transportation to the library's various facilities and other locations in the provision of regular library services and programs. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES This position involves bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, retrieving, standing, walking and sitting. Must be able to reach high and low shelves to retrieve books and other materials or equipment. Must be able to push library carts and bins filled with materials weighing up to 200 pounds and occasionally lift large bins full of materials that weigh up to 40 pounds. Must be able to climb stairs and drive an automobile. Must be able to transport audio-visual and other equipment necessary to conduct the programs and services of the library.
Additional Info & Requirements
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's license and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment. The candidate recommended for hire must also successfully complete a pre-employment physical, which includes a substance screen. Background investigations may be done prior to employment.
