Job Description

The Vermont State College System (VSCS) is merging its four campus-based colleges & universities into a single accredited institution. As part of this merger, the current VSCS libraries will be consolidated into a single integrated virtual library system that serves both the newly merged institution as well as the Community College of Vermont. The VSCS is hiring a Director to lead the work of the VSCS libraries as we undertake this transformation. Come help us build a great library system!

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the work of the four VSCS libraries as they transform to a single integrated virtual library system
  • Inspire, coach, motivate, and coalesce dedicated library staff across the system to execute library transformation goals.
  • Develop, direct, and manage the various functions and services of the library, including planning long-range and short-term objectives aligned with the strategic priorities of the VSCS.
  • Direct professional development planning that advances information literacy learning outcomes for students and increases use of high-quality Open Educational Resources.
  • Represent the VSCS in professional activities at the state, regional and national level.
  • Direct vendor relationships and negotiations.
  • Collect and report data on library resource utilization and staffing.
  • Provide budget oversight for all operations related to the virtual integrated library system, including directly related operations of the existing four physical collections.
  • Leverage all existing financial and human resources to support new approaches to a statewide, virtual integrated library system.
  • Serve on institution, system and professional committees.
  • Formulate, recommend and enforce policies relevant to library resources and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Administrative leadership and supervision of library employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position receives direct supervision from the system Chief Academic Officer and oversight by the VSCS Council of Presidents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in library science, plus four to seven years of progressive administrative and management experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Passion for innovation in academic library design and delivery and the ability to interpret and meet a variety of needs for a system-wide operation.
  • Experience with library instruction using advanced learning and communication technologies.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, relationship-building, and supervisory skills.
  • Experience with innovative approaches to end-user services, with an emphasis on customer service in online environments.
  • A demonstrated ability to collaborate and manage resources in an effective, creative and equitable manner.
  • Experience with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and in making such work a foundation of institutional culture.
