Job Description
Position is primarily scheduled in Children’s library; however, may be asked to work in other areas of the library as needed. Design, plan, promote, evaluate, and implement children's library programs, including story hours, summer reading program and special events for varying age groups. Train other staff as needed. Assess new needs in programming and technology. Maintain statistics. Provide reference and reader's advisory services. Prepare book lists, bibliographies and book talks. Evaluate, develop, and maintain children's library collection. Review, select and order children’s materials within budget allocations. Provide community outreach services by conducting library tours; maintain contact with school media specialists and other children’s librarians. Visit schools to promote library programs. Work with other library staff to facilitate continual updating and upgrading of web site content. Maintain quality public service by providing direct service to library patrons at a public service desk. Assist patrons by recommending books and assisting in selection of books and other materials; answer research and reference questions using both print and electronic resources; and assist patrons in the use of public-access catalogs and resource materials; explain and enforce library policies and procedures. Research the availability of grant monies and prepare grant applications; solicit funds and donations for library programs in accordance with priorities set by the Library Strategic Plan. Collaborate with other library and city staff in developing services and programs. Assist with the development and implementation of the library’s automated programs and services. Provide assistance in the use of equipment and software to both staff and patrons. May participate in regional consortium activities or committees. Work with the city and consortium IT staff in diagnosing computer and network problems. Provide on-the-job training to personnel and volunteers as needed. Participate in the review of job applicants and in the interview process when appropriate. Assume responsibility for operation of the department in the absence of the Manager. Provide input to budget for assigned area. Prepare reports, collect statistics and keep records as assigned. Read professional publications and attend professional meetings to keep informed of new publications and library materials, services, and current events that affect assigned program area. Perform related duties as required.
